Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley.  The village is inhabited by both Quiché Indians and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). The prevalent language is Spanish.  Families in this village live in one or two room homes generally constructed of either wood or adobe.  Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers and many other small-town tradesmen.   It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area.

Hello, my name is Kevin Jonatan Benito Chingo.  I was born on March 15, 2011.  I am a healthy child, and I walk about 20 minutes to get to the feeding program.  I have one brother and one sister.  My father’s name is Domingo and he works as a farmer.  My mother’s name is Hilaria and she takes care of our home.  Sometimes, she washes clothes for other people to earn extra money.  We rent our house and we pay Q300 ($40) per month.  The house has two rooms and a kitchen.  It is made of cement blocks with a tile roof and a cement floor.  We have water and electricity.  We buy our drinking water separately.  My family does not travel to the coast to work as some families do.  I am in the 2nd grade.  My favorite color is orange and my favorite animal is the cat.  The foods that I like best are watermelon and chow mein.  In my free time, I like to play with my toy cars and balls or to ride a bicycle.  My family attends an Evangelical church.

With much love and many blessings,

Kevin Jonatan Benito Chingo
