My Story

Chixocol, where your child lives, is a very small village nestled in a mountain valley in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this state is very difficult and somewhat isolated from the outside world. Most families live in one-room adobe houses with dirt floors and a small attached kitchen. The extremely poor live in houses made of corn stalks. In the past few years electricity and water have become available to most people in the area - however, indoor plumbing is very rare. Most of the families are farmers or shepherds and live off the fruits of their labors. Public education is available for those who can afford it and consider it of value.  Life in Quiche is always a challenge.

I feel so blessed to be part of the feeding program and be able to send you my regards. My name is Kendrick David Barrera Hernandez. My parents are: Victor David Barrera Garcia and Ana Josefina Hernandez Mendez. I was born on February 9, 2020 and I am 6 years old now. I am in kindergarten. My hobby is playing soccer. My favorite color is blue and I love cats. The food that I like the most is fried chicken. I am a healthy child. I love my parents because they are very responsible and hard working. I am grateful that each of them is in good health. My father moved to the United States in order to find better job opportunities. He works in a dairy farm. He keeps in touch with us and he faithfully sends us a monthly support. My mother is a housewife. I have one sister and she attends the feeding program too. My family attends a Christian church called “Dios Emmanuel”.

We live in my grandparents’ house. There are five rooms made of adobe, tile roof, concrete floor and a separate kitchen. It has running water and electricity. My parents share our expenses with my grandparents. Our pets are a dog and a cat. Our greatest needs are groceries and clothes. It is about 10 minutes by bus from home to the feeding program. This is all for now. I hope you enjoy reading my letter.

Kisses and hugs,

Kendrick David Barrera Hernandez
