My Story

Duenas, where your child lives, is a small farming village located at the foot of one of Guatemala's active volcanoes, Fuego (Fire). The fertile ground around the village allows for the cultivation of roses and coffee, two of Guatemala's largest exports. Most of the families in this area live in one or two room wooden or adobe houses with tin roofs. Electricity is available to those who can afford it. Running water is available - however, most homes do not have indoor plumbing. Public education is available for those who can afford it and consider education of value. Life in Duenas is quiet and sometimes difficult.

My name is Alba Maria Mejia Yapan, and this is part of my history. I was born on October 18, 2015, so I am now 10 years old. I am in good health, and I am attending 4th grade this year. I enjoy playing with my toys in my free time. My favorite dish is a typical one called “hilachas”. I like the color lilac, and I love cats. I have three brothers and three sisters, and two of my sisters are registered at the feeding program too. We walk for 30 minutes to arrive at the program.  As a family, we are attending Prince of Peace Church. I ask for your prayers for us so that God always blesses us with groceries, shoes and school supplies.

My father’s name is Luis Alfredo Mejia Quexel, and he works as a day laborer. My mother’s name is Brenda Maribel Yapan Ordonez de Mejia, and she is a housewife; she helped me to write this letter. We are a humble family, and we are frequently in need of groceries and food. We live in our own house which is made of concrete block with a concrete roof and floor. It has four room but no kitchen, so my mom cooks in the corridor. We have running water and electricity services, and my dad pays these bills every month. I say goodbye to you for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.
