My Story

Chuchuca, where your child lives, is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Chuchuca is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

My name is Angellica Chingo Lux, and I am very happy to share some about my life through this letter. I was born in Joyabaj Quiche, on December 3, 2021. I am 4 years old. I am not attending school yet because I am still young, but I will start soon. I live with my parents and my siblings. I have 5 brothers and one sister, and four of them are enrolled in the feeding program too. I am very excited to be part of this program now because there are many different activities in which now I can be a part. I like playing part of the time and I love to play with dolls at home with my sister.  I love my sister. I want to tell you my favorite color is pink, and my favorite animal is the cat. I like to eat many foods, but my favorite food is noodles. My father´s name is Vicente Chingo Ajqui and my mother´s name is Juana Lux Pastor. Both struggle a lot to give us the necessities. My father works as a day laborer and farmer. My mother is a housewife and sometimes she sells fruits such as jocotes, blackberries and corn. Seven months ago, my father suffered an accident. He broke his right foot, but thanks to God now, he is in good health.

By the grace of God, we live in my mother´s house. It has two rooms and a separate kitchen. It is made of different materials like adobe walls, tin sheet roof and dirt floor. We have running water and my father pays for it. We do not have electricity. We use candles and lanterns to brighten the night. At home we raise some domestic animals like hens, pigs, dogs, cats and sheep. I want to you know that we have some needs despite my parents’ efforts, and some of them are food, corn, clothes and shoes. I ask God to provide for us. My siblings and I walk around 30 minutes to get to the feeding program. It makes me happy to be able to share some information about me and to know that someone from so far away might be thinking about me.

Much Love,

Angelica Chingo Lux
