Cuatro Caminos
Guatemala
Child
Cuatro Caminos "four roads", where your child lives, is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Cuatro Caminos is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.
Hello! My name is Nestor Yobani Gutierrez Morales, and I am writing this letter to tell you about my life. I was born on October 6, 2021, so I am still 3 years old. I am in good health, and I stay at home playing with my toy cars. My favorite color is red, and I love dogs. I really enjoy eating fried chicken. My family and I are attending the Catholic Church, and thank God, everybody is healthy. My father is Edgar Yovani Gutierrez Jimon, and he works as a day laborer and mason helper. My mother is Tomasa Morales Tian, and she is a housewife; she raises hens for the family consumption. My parents do not grow corn like other families in our village since we do not have a piece of land for it.
We live in our own house, and it only has one room and a kitchen. It is made of tin sheets with a dirt floor. My paternal grandparents live next to us, and they provide us with the electricity and running water services; my parents pay half of the bills. We have two hens at home. We are a humble family, and our frequent needs are corn, groceries and clothes. I have three brothers and one sister, and three of them are registered at the feeding program too. Our mother accompanies us, and we have to walk for 30 minutes to arrive at the program. I tell you that she helped me to give my information to LW Evangelism team. I say goodbye to you for now.
With much love
Nestor Yobani Gutierrez Morales
