My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley.  The village is inhabited by both Quiché Indians and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). The prevalent language is Spanish.  Families in this village live in one or two room homes generally constructed of either wood or adobe.  Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers and many other small-town tradesmen.   It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area.  Even with all of this, the poverty level is very high and the children are very needy.

I send you many greetings in Jesus’ name and I want to tell you about my life. This is Kevin Bacilio Cux Benito and I am 4 years old. I was born in Zacualpa, Quiche on May 9, 2021. I am not attending school yet because of my age and I stay at home and play with toy cars. I am in good health.  I love color red and dogs. I enjoy eating rice and beans. I only have one brother. My uncles are enrolled in the Feeding Center and we attend together. We walk ten minutes to arrive there. I live under my parents’ care. Their names are Manuel Rolando Cux Calachij and Josefina Benito de la Cruz. My father sustains the family financially by working as a driver on a moto-taxi while my mother dedicates her time to the family and housework. We are a humble family, so our frequent needs are groceries. We believe in God and we attend the Catholic Church.

I live in my grandmother`s house. Her name is Juana de la Cruz and my grandparents and my uncles live there too. We are praying for provision because we would like to have our own house someday. We trust in God that he will answer our prayers. We have two rooms and one separated kitchen. The rooms are made of block walls, tin sheet roof and cemented floors. We have electricity and my parents and grandparents pay the bill monthly. They also share the home expenses. We get water from our natural spring. We have hens at home, but we would like to have some chicks. Well, I will say good bye for now and may God bless you!

Sincerely yours,

Kevin Bacilio Cux Benito
