My Story

Nueva Esperanza, which means New Hope, is located in a slum area of Guatemala City, Guatemala. An extremely poor area, our program is squeezed in among the shanty dwellings built over an old city dump. Many houses in this area are without toilets or running water and are assembled with scrap wood, sheet metal, and cardboard. Zone 5, where Nueva Esperanza is located, is considered one of the most dangerous areas of Guatemala City. It is controlled by gangs and drug pushers. Robberies and murders are common in this area. Public education is available - however, many cannot afford it. Life in Zone 5 is very difficult. It is an extremely dangerous area where criminals, prostitutes and drug addicts live.

It is a pleasure to greet you in Jesus’ name. I am so happy to be part of the feeding program and to be able to write a little about myself. I am Mia Alejandra Sorayda Quib Sujuy. I was born on October 10, 2018. I am 6 years old now. I attend school and I am in kindergarten. In my spare time, I enjoy playing kitchen, dolls, painting and drawing. I love blue and my favorite animal is the elephant. The food that I like to eat the most are eggs, spaghetti, beans and tomatoes sauce. After school my grandmother takes us to the park near our home. I live only with my mother Keren Sorayda Quib Sujuy because when I was born my father did not take responsibility for me. My mother makes an effort to support our family working in the customer service area of a blanket shop.  I have one sister Hanny, and she also attends the feeding program. Thanks to God my family is fine. We attend a Christian church called “Peniel”.

We live in a rented house. There is one room and a separate kitchen made of block, concrete roof and cement floor. It has running water and electricity. My mother pays the rent and services monthly. Our greatest needs are shoes, groceries and school supplies. I walk about 30 minutes from home to the feeding program. My sister and I stay under the care of my grandmother Ana while my mother goes to work. Thank you so much for reading my letter.

Many hugs,

Mia Alejandra Sorayda Quib Sujuy
