Pasojoc

Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.
My full name is Henry Danilo Ajqui Garcia, and I am excited to greet you and share my story with you. I was born on November 23, 2019. I am 5 years old and fortunately, I am doing well. I am in pre-kindergarten. My favorite color is mint green. I like sheep, and my favorite food is fried chicken. I have a lot of fun playing soccer with my friends. I also enjoy looking for firewood in the field alongside my siblings. I have four brothers and two sisters. My parents are Francisco Ajqui Alvarado and Juana Ajqui Alvarado. My father is dedicated to raising and selling cows, while my mother keeps busy doing the chores and raising chickens for our consumption.
As for their health, let me tell you that they both had problems with their gallbladders, but they underwent surgeries some months ago. To pay for the surgeries, my father sold some cows. Fortunately, my parents are recovering. The house where we live is ours. It is made of concrete blocks, metal sheet roofs, and concrete floors. It has two rooms, a separate kitchen (made of metal sheets and wood), running water, and electricity. I am glad because I am already part of the feeding program. I live about one hour away, so I usually walk to get there. My oldest sister is the one who takes me there. It is time to say goodbye, but I appreciate you taking the time to read my letter. Until next time!
Cordiality yours,
Henry Danilo Ajqui Garcia
