My Story

Zacualpa is a small but busy village in a mountain valley.  The village is inhabited by both Quiché Indians and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). The prevalent language is Spanish. Families in this village live in one or two room homes generally constructed of either wood or adobe.  Although many of the people are farmers, the village contains several small, specialized stores, a body repair shop for buses, mechanics, plumbers and many other smalltown tradesmen. It also has a large open-air market which serves much of the area.  Even with all of this, the poverty level is very high, and the children are very needy.

Hello! I am Estiben Noriel Morente Garcia. I am so happy to introduce myself to you. Moreover, I will share something about my family and house. My mother helped me to give all the information to you. I will start with my family. My father´s name is Agustin Morete Luis. He is a mason´s helper. My mother´s name is Magdalena Garcia Ruiz. She is a housewife. I have two sisters only. My mother and siblings attend the feeding program. It takes us 15 minutes to get there by tuc-tuc. We are not members of any church, but I hope to be part of one soon. Thank God, all of us enjoy good health.

About me, I was born on July 23, 2020. I am a 4-year-old healthy boy. I am still too young to attend school. I like playing with toy cars. I love eating fried chicken. My favorite animal is the sheep, and I like blue. My father owns a two-room house and one kitchen. The kitchen just has a tin sheet roof. The rest of the house is made of adobe, tin sheet roof and dirt floor. Our paternal grandfather shares electricity and running water. My parents and he share the expenses of those services as well. We have a dog and cats at home. Our greatest need at home is to fix our house because the tin sheet is damaged, and the water comes in during the rainy season. Moreover, the kitchen only has a roof. Well, this is my short story. I look forward to sharing more next time. Take care!

With love,

Estiben Noriel Morente Garcia
