My Story

Dueñas, where your child lives, is a small farming village located at the foot of one of Guatemala's active volcanoes, Fuego (Fire). The fertile ground around the village allows for the cultivation of roses and coffee, two of Guatemala's largest exports. Most of the families in this area live in one or two room wooden or adobe houses with tin roofs. Electricity is available to those who can afford it. Running water is available - however, most homes do not have indoor plumbing. Public education is available for those who can afford it and consider education of value. Life in Dueñas is quiet and sometimes difficult.

It is a blessing to say hello to you through this letter! My full name is Aby Nicol Valle Hernandez, and I am glad to share a little about my life with you. I was born on September 13, 2018. Today, I am a healthy 6-year-old girl. I still do not attend school, but I hope to do it soon. I like listening to music and painting. My favorite color is pink. There are a lot of beautiful animals, but my favorite is the elephant. I live with my parents and one brother. At the moment, I do not have any sisters. My father is Jose Antonio Valle Shoc. He makes a living as a carpenter to supply our basic needs and cover the household expenses. However, everything is expensive now, so it is difficult for him to support our family. Therefore, I beg you to pray for him. Like many housewives, my mom keeps busy cleaning our house, caring for my brother and me, and preparing delicious meals. My favorite food is black beans with pork or beef.

My family and I live in a rented house made of concrete block walls, tin sheet roofs, and concrete floors. My father must pay Q750=$97 monthly for it. The house has two rooms, electricity, and running water. Let me tell you that my grandparents also live with us, so each family uses one room. Fortunately, we have enough space at home for our pets. We have two lovely dogs. I am glad because I can enjoy delicious meals and make more friends at the feeding program. The distance from my house to get there is about fifteen minutes. My father usually takes me there on a motorcycle. I say goodbye to you now, but if you want to hear something else about me, feel free to ask me.

Best wishes,

Aby Nicol Valle Hernandez
