My Story

Cuatro Caminos "four roads", where your child lives, is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiché, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is a two-hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Cuatro Caminos is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiché Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiché - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

Hello! My name is Deysi Fabiola Quino Benito. I am 9 years old, and I was born on April 13, 2012. I am in good health. I am in 4th grade this year, and I like to play with toy dishes in my free time. I like the color red, the animal I like is the hen, and my favorite meal is fried chicken. I have one brother and one sister, my brother is also registered at the feeding program like me, and we walk 10 minutes to arrive. My father’s name is Manuel Quino Portuguez, and he works both as a farmer and as a day laborer to cover our needs. My mother’s name is Maria Luisa Benito Gomez, and she improves our income by weaving typical blouses to sell. As a family, we are members of National Methodist Church.

Thankfully, we live in our own house; it is made of concrete blocks with a cement roof and ceramic floor. It has four rooms, separate kitchen, electricity which is paid every month, and we have our own well where we get water for our use.  We have some hens and pigs at home. We are in need of groceries, but we trust that God will provide what we need. I want you to know that my mother gave all this information for my enrollment process. May God bless you; I hope you find my letter interesting, and I will be waiting to receive news from you soon.
