My Story

Jocotenango, where I live, is in the state of Sacatepequez, Guatemala, and is a suburb of Antigua. It is an urban environment inhabited by both Quiche Mayans and Ladinos (those with mixed European ancestry). Most of the children attend school, but financial hardship affects many families and forces most of the children to leave after the sixth grade. Only one out of ten children finish high school. Children in this area face temptations from gangs and drugs.

I am Carlos Fernando Rosales Gomez, and now, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born on February 22th, 2019 in Antigua Guatemala. Fortunately, I am a healthy boy. I am too young now, so I do not attend school yet. Because of that, I enjoy my time playing soccer and running. My favorite color is blue, and my favorite dish is fried chicken with French fries. My favorite pets are cats. Luckily, I have one at home and a dog too. I live with my mother and only have one sister. My mother’s name is Evelyn Melissa Rosales Gomez. She strives a lot to cover our food essentials by tending a parking lot at night in Antigua. Unfortunately, my father abandoned my family and me a long time ago, and we do not know anything about him. We do not attend any church yet, but I hope to do it soon. My family and I live with my grandmother, three uncles, and their families in a rented house. My mother and my relatives pay Q1,050.00 quetzals=$134.40 dollars monthly. The house is comprised of concrete block and tin sheet walls, tin sheet roof, and cement floors. It has two rooms, a separate kitchen, electricity, and running water. Thankfully, the feeding program is only a ten-minute walk from my home. Attending the program is a blessing for my family and me since the pandemic has been difficult economically because incomes have been lower. I leave you now, but I would like to receive a letter to know about your life. See you later!

Kind regards,

Carlos Fernando Rosales Gomez
