Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiché, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two-hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major corps. The Quiché Indians who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak an Indian dialect called Quiché - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.
Hello, my name is Adolfo Jeovany Pastor Chic. I was born on April 03, 2011 and I am 8 years old. I am a basically healthy boy. I was not registered at school this year because we traveled to the coast to work, and when we returned to our town, there was not space in the school. I spend my time playing soccer with my siblings and friends. My favorite color is blue and my favorite animal is the dog. The food that I like to eat the most is fried chicken. My favorite fruit is the apple. I have four brothers and five sisters. Three of my siblings are registered in the feeding program and they come with me. We walk about 15 minutes to get to the feeding program. My father’s name is Daniel Pastor and he is a farmer. He grows corn and black beans for our consumption. He also travels to the coast to work on the coffee plantations. My mother’s name is Fermina Chic and she is a housewife. She raises domestic animals that she sells when it is needed. My whole family travels to the coast from October to March. We live in our own house made of adobe with a tin sheet roof and dirt floor. The house has one room, a separate kitchen and electricity. We do not have running water. We get our water from a small natural water source. Some of my cousins also come to the feeding program and sometimes we come together. My family does not attend a church yet.
With much love and many blessings,
Adolfo Jeovany Pastor Chic
